The Wonderland Society is a supposedly charitable organization of an impostor, the English-born John, who was set up to appropriate the ore-rich pasture of the naive and hereditary Hilarion. To succeed, Mister John uses the preacher, Cosmas, who "leans" the beloved and literate peasants, as well as the beautiful Mina, assisted by her mother Danae. Danae represents the mute, which will find herself again thanks to the "miracle" of the saint, but the catalyst of love, between Hilarion and Mina, is the occasion to reveal the apses of all.
